Young Jazz To Open This Year’s Scarborough Jazz Festival
Musicianship! Creativity! Innovation! Potential! The opening act at this year’s Scarborough Jazz Festival could be big news in the future.Artephis, comprising five musicians from Manchester aged from 20 to 21, is the latest beneficiary of the Jazz North Introduces scheme, which offers them high-profile exposure at leading jazz festivals in the north, along with help in promoting themselves.
This is a pioneering initiative by Jazz North, the organisation devoted to nurturing and showcasing talent. The band was selected from a wide range of applications for the scheme after impressing a Jazz North panel with its talent and enthusiasm.
Artephis is made up of Aaron Wood on trumpet/flugel, James Girling on guitar, Ali Roocroft on piano, Alasdair Simpson on bass and Matt Brown on drums. The band describes its approach as ‘forward looking and contemporary’, comprising active young musicians from the Royal Northern College of Music.
Since its formation twelve months ago, the quintet has been building a repertoire of original compositions and arrangements with the band members being committed to taking their familiar jazz quintet line up in new directions. Among its inspirations and influences are Christian Scott Quintet, Miles Davis Quintet, Wynton Marsalis and Pat Metheny.
Scarborough Jazz Festival is one of Jazz North’s partners in this initiative. Director Mike Gordon said
“I’m delighted that Artephis will be playing at this year’s festival (12.30pm Friday 23rd September). I was one of the judging panel and voted for them. I was impressed by their exciting and professional approach. They could be big stars in the future.”
The festival takes place on 23-25 September at the Scarborough Spa. Tickets are priced at £85 (earlybird) and £90 (from 1st June). Tickets are available from www.scarboroughjazzfestival.co.uk or the Scarborough Spa Box Office (01723 821888).
