Heroes, villains, fame and infamy always make great history and the
new book Scarborough A History of the Town and Its People has it
all.

Written by local author Wendy M Rhodes, this book dares to not only tell the story of
Scarborough’s rich history, from the invasion of the barbaric Harold Hardrada and his
army burning, pillaging and destroying the town, to the Norman Conquest and the
genteel occupation of the town by monks and friars. The battle between Roundheads
and Royalists and the siege of Scarborough Castle and finding of spaw waters
establishing the town as the queen of watering places and Britain’s first seaside
resort.

The book also tells the story of how Scarborough almost changed history
when Prince Bertie Queen Victoria’s son stayed in the town. It tells of Scarborough’s
many celebrities together with stories of villains, smugglers, scoundrels and even the
occasional murderer.

‘It is, in every sense, a book that no local or holidaymaker should be without. The
book is all-encompassing, sweepingly encyclopaedic, and something no self-
respecting Scarborough resident or visitor should be without. A triumph!’ (Dominic
Walsh Journalist)

The book Scarborough A History of the Town and Its People is due for release 7th
August. Available On Amazon and all good bookshops. Book signings will take place
around the town later in the year.
