Spa Orchestra's Popular Gilbert and Sullivan Extravaganza Returns

Scarborough Spa Orchestra

One of the most popular evenings presented by the Scarborough Spa Orchestra is always the Gilbert and Sullivan Extravaganza which this year will be performed on Wednesday 25th July at 7.45pm.

The attraction of these Victorian comic operas is hard to explain.  Certainly, Sullivan’s tunes remain catchy or jaunty or romantic and always memorable.

Even on first hearing, they make such an impression that something will be hummed or whistled as you leave the concert.

Gilbert’s lyrics are witty, clever and easily remembered.  More than this, they were satirical when they were written and amazingly the satire is still appropriate today.

Iolanthe questions the effectiveness of the House of Lords, and we all know that the usefulness of the Upper Chamber is a topical debate of today.

The Gondoliers looks at issues surrounding class distinction and the monarchy debate, amongst other things.  What could be more relevant?

Bringing these songs to life will be four of today’s very best G and S singers.  Debra Morley is very much in demand throughout the UK from the Royal Albert Hall to the Edinburgh Festival.  She has worked widely in Europe and as far away as Japan.  She sang all the leading G and S soprano roles for the famous D’Oyly Carte Opera Company.
Mezzo-soprano Louise Crane has a very distinguished career, having sung with all the major opera companies, including Glyndebourne, English National Opera and the Belgium Royal Opera.

And she, too, sang with D’Oyly Carte at London’s Savoy Theatre and then on tour in the USA.

Tenor Joe Shovelton comes to Scarborough hot-foot from having set the West End on fire with his hilarious performance in Cole Porter’s Kiss Me Kate.  He was also a D’Oyly Carte soloist, touring the UK and America.  He is a regular leading singer with Opera North.

As much in demand in the USA and he is in the UK, Richard Suart is widely accepted as the greatest living G and S comedian.  In a very varied career including modern and avant-garde opera, he has sung the comic lead in The Mikado every time English National Opera has staged it for the last 25 years.  He is just as popular with San Francisco Opera and New York City Opera.

The programme will include selections from HMS Pinafore, The Gondoliers and Iolanthe.

In addition, the singers will perform their own favourite songs, including Richard Suart’s Little List from The Mikado.

The Gilbert and Sullivan evening is a regular feature of the Spa Orchestra’s summer season and always draws a large enthusiastic audience.

General Admission is £13.00 and Under 16s go free.

Tickets are now on sale for all Spa Orchestra concerts and are available from The Spa Box Office (01723) 821888 or via
