Scarborough Theatre Trials Exciting New Childcare Initiative

An exciting new childcare initiative aimed at theatregoers with young children is being piloted by Scarborough’s Stephen Joseph Theatre next month.
On Friday 7 September, the theatre will have a free crèche on the premises between 5pm and 7pm, run by qualified staff, to allow parents of children aged 0 to 12 years to attend the 5.30pm performance of Build a Rocket.
Places on the crèche will be included in the ticket price, and light snacks will be available for the children, provided by Mojo's Music Café. Places will be allocated on a first-come, first served basis, and tickets must be booked in advance on the phone or in person at the box office (not online); the booker must state at the time of booking how many places on the crèche are required, and the ages of the children. Build a Rocket runs for approximately 75 minutes, so parents can get young children home by bedtime.
The SJT’s Artistic Director Paul Robinson says: “Build a Rocket is about a young single mum from Scarborough and the challenges she faces while bringing up her baby.

“One of her biggest problems is childcare, as it is for so many parents, so it seemed appropriate to trial this scheme around a late afternoon performance of this show.

“We hope this will make it easier for parents who might usually struggle to get to the theatre to attend."
Build a Rocket, a one-woman show by Scarborough writer Christopher York, is returning to the SJT after a successful month-long run at the Edinburgh Fringe, where it gained four-star reviews.
Directed by the SJT’s Artistic Director Paul Robinson, it tells the story of Yasmin, played by Serena Manteghi, last seen at the SJT as LV in the summer 2017 production of The Rise and Fall of Little Voice.
It can be seen at the SJT from Friday 31 August to Saturday 8 September.
