Meet The Author : Scarborough: A History of the Town and its People

We sat down with Wendy Rhodes, the author of Scarborough: A History and its People to find out a little more about the new release.

Tell us a little about yourself...

I am Wendy Rhodes I am a local author specialising in local history and creative non-fiction, which sounds complex, but basically, I like to get hold of a true story or the history of a town and effectively resurrect characters, events, people and places and bring them back to life.
I am 59 (not for long) and took a degree in English Literature with the Open University, followed by a master’s degree in Creative Writing at Teesside University, both when I passed the age of fifty.

Why a book about Scarborough?

The reason for me wanting to write the history of Scarborough was that I am addicted to researching and once I started I just cannot stop. Last year I wrote the book on the history of Filey and its people and I was so encouraged by the book's reception, that I could not resist writing about Scarborough. I have lived in the area for a long time (Filey, although I live in Spain now, still have a business in Filey) Scarborough has such a fascinating and varied history that I just had to record it)

Can you tell us a little bit about the book?

The book is quite intensive and traces the history of the town from ice-age, Romans through the Norman Conquest and beyond. It tells the story of the rise of the town as it became known as the queen of watering places and Britain’s first holiday resort. The book also tells of some of the towns crimes, accidents and even the occasional murder.
