YAY COFFEE! Moves to Woodend

One of Scarborough’s most iconic independent coffee shops is moving to a new home, with Yay Coffee! opening for business at Woodend in mid-August.

Yay – run by husband and wife team Lottie and Rob McFarlane – was opened in York Place in October 2015 and has become a home-from-home for Scarborough’s coffee lovers.

But with the lease on their property up for renewal, Lottie and Rob decided it offered them the chance to do what they had always wanted to do, and ‘go mobile.’

So from mid-August that will see them set up a pop-up coffee shop in Woodend, the town’s former natural history museum and now home to more than 100 people working in the creative sector.

“This is a fantastic opportunity for us,” said Lottie. “Our passion has always been to serve great coffee in relaxed surroundings with a focus on the local community, and Woodend allows us to do exactly that.”

Woodend Director Andrew Clay was equally excited. “I could not be more enthusiastic about this move,” he said. “It’s a partnership between Woodend and one of Scarborough’s most exciting young retailers and will give a whole new dynamic to the Woodend entrance. It will benefit both our tenants and our visitors.”

Lottie and Rob are now in the process of moving their existing shop – including tables, chairs, bar and coffee machine – to Woodend and expect to open there within two to three weeks. “We won’t be offering the full range of food we did at York Place,” said Lottie, “But we will be serving cakes – including our very indulgent salted caramel brownies. We’ll also be looking at staying open in the evenings for Woodend events.”
